Bella was kind enough to take on this week’s post about The Complete Beck Diet for Life – don’t forget to join the discussion at her blog here!
Bloggy Beck Book Club – Week #2
Last week we talked about the homework Beck gives her readers in The Complete Beck Diet for Life. We talked about how it felt like a lot of work, but also about how we could see the sense in the tasks Beck gave her readers.
This week, I’d like to make the discussion more about you. What was your favorite part of the homework? Least favorite part of it?
As a refresher, some of the homework tasks included the following:
- Making an advantages deck (a list of reasons why you want to lose weight);
- Making response cards (a list of responses you can use when you are tempted to go off the deep end);
- Making a distractions list (or box) – things you can do to distract yourself from the temptation to eat off-plan.
If you don’t mind, would you share your three favorites of each of those things? Here’s my thought: there is strength in numbers. And, as I posted earlier, there is power in words. If we can all contribute to this post today, it will become a resource for us all – and maybe for others in the future. We can refer back to it when we need the reminder. I might serve as our “mobile” cards or be a great substitute when we’re in a pinch without our cards. The point is, two (or four, or twenty) are better than one.
So your homework for this week? Here it is:
- Review the cards you made for yourself on a daily basis. This is practice for Stage I, which we’ll get into next week over at Scale Warfare’s blog.
- Post your three favorite Advantages, Responses, and Distractions.
- Share with us any challenges (or victories) you had with, or as a result of, the homework in pages 1-49 of the book.
Jump on in! I’ll post my favorites in the comments with everyone else.
Bloggy Beck Book Club – Discussion #1
Welcome to our first official Bloggy Beck Book Club “session,” y’all! I am excited to get into the nitty gritty of this book with you, so I am going to get right to it. Scale Warfare and Bella will be joining us here today, and we will all rotate hosting future blog posts about this book.
Your homework for today was to read pages 1-49 of The Complete Beck Diet for Life and complete the homework given in those pages. A summary of your to-dos includes:
- Gather your supplies:
- 3×5 index cards
- Blank business cards
- A diet notebook
- A digital scale
- Graph paper
- A small box
- A larger box
- Multiple sets of measuring spoons & cups
- A digital food scale
- Set a modest weight loss goal.
- Make time for dieting (read: schedule it in!).
- Get a Diet Buddy.
- Get organized – make the supplies you need easy to find, and get rid of foods that don’t support your goals.
- Make a Memory Box.
- Fill your Distractions Box.
- Talk to your family/friends/support system about what you’re doing.
- Build a sense of entitlement.
- Make your Response Cards.
- Make your Advantages Deck (a special set of Response Cards that you read daily to remind yourself why weight loss is so important).
We’ll touch on most of these homework items today (warning, warning, long post ahead!) and, for some of them, revisit them over and over throughout the book club discussion in the coming weeks.
So first question – how’d you do with the homework? Did it feel like a lot? Did you find yourself thinking, “This is an awful lot of work, I wonder if it’s really worth it?” I know I did. Last year I first came across one of Beck’s books and I remember thinking how much work it all seemed to require. Surely one could lose weight without spending THAT kind of time and putting THAT much energy into the process.
Or not. So fast-forward to this year when I started reading this book, and I was a whole lot more willing to do the work. Are you? I’m really interested to hear your thoughts on this.
I went back and reread the introduction/first chapter this week. What would you do if I told you that you could be free from guilt, worry, self-consciousness, and self-blame regarding your weight? How would it feel to be free of hunger and your fear of losing control? What if temptation was no longer overwhelming to you and you were able to quit eating emotionally? Beck suggests that all these things, and many more, are possible for everyone who implements the skills she outlines in her book.
I won’t promise you that this book is the silver bullet; a magic “pill” that will make losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight feel easy. It won’t. The skills you learn in this book require time and work in order for you to reap the benefits. But I can tell you that, in my personal experience, these skills really do help. For me, the biggest benefit I have gained from practicing these skills is the ability to remember, at any given moment, what my goals are and why my behavior and choices in that moment matter. Mindfulness of what I’m trying to achieve has enabled me to make much better choices the overwhelming majority of the time.
Questions for y’all to chew on and talk about in the comments:
- Did you do all the homework?
- Was there a part of you that resisted doing any/all of the work?
- What was your favorite part?
- Is any one of these tools proving to be more useful to you than the others?
- What are your favorite “advantages” and “responses”? I’d love to hear what kind of self-talk is working for y’all!
Please jump in with your thoughts, questions, ideas, and feedback. Let’s make this discussion meaningful not only for us, but as a resource for anyone who might stumble upon this post in the future!
An Interview with Dr. Beck
What a great opportunity! Bella had the inspired idea to e-mail Dr. Beck to see if she would be willing to answer some questions about her books and the techniques she teaches. She said yes, and that interview is posted today on Bella’s blog – check it out!
As a refresher, here are the deets on the book club:
- Our first official discussion will be held on Thursday, February 25 and I’ll host that discussion.
- Each Thursday thereafter, we’ll rotate hosting a discussion of a particular part of the book on our blogs.
- There will be homework! This ain’t some sissy book club, friends. Not only will we ask y’all to read the book; we’ll also ask you to do stuff. So gird your loins (whatever that means) and get ready to work.
- There may be other fun things along the way, like giveaways or contests. So keep yer eyes peeled.

Bloggy Beck Book Club & a Giveaway
Friends, I have an announcement! (Side note #1: I think this is my first ever announcement! lol)
Scale Warfare, Bella, and I have decided to host an in-depth discussion of the book so many folks have been talking about lately. Jen at Prior Fat Girl is doing it, y’all are talking about it, and we decided to join in on the fun!
But, wait, there’s even cooler stuff to know: we are kicking it off by hosting a giveaway! (Side note #2: This is definitely my first giveaway ever!) Starting today, we’ll each post the details of our giveaways, so make sure to check each blog for how to enter.
What are we giving away? A brand spanking new copy of The Complete Beck Diet for Life, which will be the topic of our book club discussions.
Here are my rules: there are no rules! Simply leave your comment below and you will be entered to win the book. My drawing will take place on Thursday, February 10, 2010 at 6pm PST. I’ll print all the names on slips of paper and have the Hottie Husband draw a name from a hat. The winner will be announced here, so make sure you check back and get me your contact information if you’re the winner. I’ll ship the book via Amazon and hopefully you’ll have it in time to join our book club.
Speaking of which, here are the deets on the book club:

Edited for Daily Weigh-In
I’m super frustrated right now! I’m weighing in at 250.6, yesterday 250.4, two days before that 251.4. Arg! I did just start my monthly visitor today (sorry if that’s TMI!) so I’m hoping the gain & stall are related to that. My eating has been super healthy and my workouts awesome, so I’m just going to keep on doing what I’m done.
